SMEATON BATTERY STORAGE PROJECT
PROJECT INFORMATION
The proposed Smeaton project would have a storage capacity of around 300 megawatts and would consist of a series of containerised battery storage units accompanied by infrastructure including transformers, a connection building and other electrical equipment. The energy storage units and other equipment would be finished in a green or grey colour and the site would be surrounded by security fencing and a significant amount of landscaping and habitat creation to enhance local biodiversity. The site would not be permanently lit when operating and would generate negligible levels of traffic once constructed.
The project would store electrical energy when there is an excess of generation on the network, and then export this when required either by peaks in demand, or to cover generation outages. This balancing role which energy storage schemes provide on the electrical network is becoming increasingly important as generation from renewable wind and solar power increases in line with the delivery of Scottish decarbonisation and renewable energy targets and such projects have a very important role in delivering this decarbonisation agenda.
The developer is holding two public consultation events in Whitecraig Village Hall on the 26th of April and the 17th of May 2023. These will run between 4pm and 8pm.
LOCATION
The project is located on land to the north of the existing Smeaton substation, west of Smeaton Shaw.
CONSULTATION EVENT
The developer is undertaking early public consultation before the site design is finalised and planning application is submitted, to make local people aware of the project and invite comments and other feedback. As part of this consultation, the developer is holding two public consultation events in Whitecraig Village Hall on the 26th of April and the 17th of May 2023. These will run between 4pm and 8pm and visitors will be able to view information about the project, ask questions, submit comments and request further information.
